Backyard Explorers Microschool
2026–2027 School Year | Park Slope, Brooklyn
Beginning September 8, 2026, Backyard Explorers will offer a very small early childhood program for children ages 2–5.
The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM through June 17, 2027.
This is not a traditional classroom.
It’s a small, steady environment where children are able to feel safe, known, and comfortable enough to truly be themselves.
Only 2–3 children attend each day.
Because of that, the days unfold differently.
We can stay with something longer.
We can return to an idea the next day.
We can move slowly when that’s what a child needs, or go deeper when something sparks.
There’s space for focus, imagination, and emotional growth without being rushed.
What the Days Include
• Outdoor time woven into the rhythm of the week (backyard + nearby parks)
• Open-ended sensory play and projects that unfold over time
• Building, water play, gardening, art, music, and cooking
• Early literacy and math woven naturally into everyday experiences
• Lunch and rest as part of a calm, predictable structure
The days are simple, but intentional.
Children are guided closely, but not hurried.
Supported, but not over-directed.
Who This Is For
This program tends to be a good fit for children who do best in smaller, more thoughtful environments.
Often, that includes children who are:
• Slow to warm up or highly sensitive
• Easily overwhelmed in larger groups
• Neurodivergent or needing a more individualized pace
• Still building comfort with separation
• Drawn to sensory play, nature, and open-ended exploration
It’s also a good fit for families who are looking for something different from a traditional preschool, including those exploring homeschooling or more alternative, nature-based paths.
The Heart of It
What matters most here is the relationship.
With such a small group, I’m able to really know each child—how they enter a space, what they need to feel safe, what excites them, what’s hard for them.
From there, everything else grows.
The goal isn’t to rush children into skills.
It’s to support them in feeling secure, capable, and connected—so those things can develop naturally.
